What's with the terms long and short?

Futures and options terminology can be different.

The futures term for buying a contract is going long.

The futures term for selling a contract is getting short.

If you anticipate a contract's price will go up, you get long that contract.

If you anticipate a contract's price will go down, you go or get short that contract.

When you close the position its called covering (the long or short).
